What is CyberKnife?
Under the leadership of the center's medical director, Mark W. Reilly, MD, patients are cared for by some of the region's leading surgeons and radiation oncologists who provide a team approach to treatment. Salt Lake CyberKnife is the first of its kind in the state of Utah and offers patients the most advanced form of treatment currently available for tumors and lesions throughout the body.
Radiation therapy has been used for many years to treat patients with low-dose radiation in 35-40 treatments. Doctors have now discovered the benefits of delivering higher doses of radiation in a more focused manner called radiosurgery, which can be more effective in killing tumors in as few as one to five treatments. Until recently, radiosurgery was limited to the treatment of brain tumors only.
The CyberKnife gives cancer patients another treatment option with the world's first dedicated radiosurgery device for the entire body. Using image guidance technology and computer controlled robotics, the CyberKnife system can track and destroy tumors in the body while accounting for slight variations in location due to movement. Because of its sub-millimeter accuracy, the CyberKnife does not require invasive head frames to correct for patient movement which enables greater flexibility for treatments and maximum patient comfort. The CyberKnife can deliver beams of radiation to a wide range of locations in the body including those in the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas, kidney and prostate.
Salt Lake CyberKnife is the result of collaboration between Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, local physicians and US Radiosurgery.
