Best In Show
Rated: PG-13
Genre: Comedy
Street Date: February 19, 2013
Available On: Blu-ray
The Film: Five dogs and their owners head off to the Mayflower Kennel Club Dog Show in hopes of coming away with the event’s blue-ribbon prize: “Best in Show.”
The Extras: Audio Commentary with Christopher Guest and Eugene Levy, Deleted Scenes, Theatrical Trailer
Recommendation: Christopher Guest (“Spinal Tap,” “Waiting for Guffman”) reteams with Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Michael McKean, Parker Posey, Jane Lynch and friends for another mocumentary filled with goofy behavior, adlibbed dialogue and ample laughs. There’s nothing particularly sophisticated about this, or any of Guest’s films, but the extremely talented cast makes the simplistic concept work. What’s more amazing and unusual is that they do so without ever being too mean spirited towards dog shows and the eccentric characters that populate them.
“Best In Show” isn’t the sort of film that demands to be seen on Blu-ray, but this release does show more detail at times (the film was shot on 16mm, which by its nature gives the picture a softer appearance) and better colors. There aren’t any newly created bonus features, but the commentary and deleted scenes offer pretty much anything you’d want to know about the creation of the film.
