Blu-ray Review: The Sweeney
Genre: Crime, Action, Drama
Street Date: April 2, 2013
Available On: DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo
The Film: Detective Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and his Flying Squad of the London Metropolitan police are an effective, but unconventional team. Their taste for violence and mayhem has attracted the attention of Internal Affairs just as Regan’s old adversary Francis Allen comes out of hiding.
The Extras: Audio Commentary with director Nick Love, Animated Storyboards and six behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Recommendation: “The Sweeney” was inspired by the 1970s television series of the same name. Fox Searchlight was originally backing the picture but pulled funding on the film just as it was about to start filming in 2008. It wasn’t until 2010 that the film went into production and while it did perform well in the UK the film was only given a limited US theatrical release. I imagine the scaled back production had a hard time justifying a wider release for two reasons: few Americans are familiar with the original television series and the ultimately the film feels rather generic with only one truly unique scene involving an extended firefight in and around Trafalgar Square.
If you like action dramas, particularly those with a British twist, you’ll be entertained by “The Sweeney.” If you’re looking for something new, different and revolutionary you won’t find it here.
