Playing for Keeps
1.5 out of 5 Stars
Director • Gabriele Muccino
Starring • Gerard Butler, Jessia Biel and Dennis Quaid
Rated • PG-13
Recommended to • Those looking for a feel good film with a decidedly mixed message.
George (Gerard Butler) used to be a professional soccer player but these days his only profession is womanizing. Nonetheless he wants to be some sort of father figure for his son, Lewis, so he becomes the coach of his son’s team and instantly becomes an object of desire for all the soccer moms.
The good news for screenwriter Robbie Fox is that 1994’s “In the Army Now” starring Pauly Shore didn’t permanently destroy his career in Hollywood. The bad news is “Playing for Keeps” is a misogynistic string of clichés featuring a cast that is altogether too good for this mess. The plot is transparent, the characters are cardboard and the performances are over exaggerated. If you’re looking for a romantic comedy go and see “Silver Linings Playbook” instead.
