Movie Review: Only God Forgives
2 out of 5 Stars
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Kristin Scott Thomas, Vithaya Pansringarm
Genre: Drama, Crimer, Thriller
Recommended To: Those in search of a soulless film with gorgeous cinematography and brutal violence.
Synopsis: Julian (Ryan Gosling) manages a boxing club in Bangkok as a front for an international drug operation. When his older brother kills an underage prostitute a wave of violence sweeps through the city’s underbelly.
Review: With Only God Forgives director Nicolas Winding Refn takes the glossy neon glow of his 2011 film Drive and moves it to Bangkok. Unfortunately Refn forgot to also bring screenwriter Hossein Amini along for the ride and as a result the film lacks depth as the one-note characters slash and jab their way through the paper-thin plot. The usually reliable Ryan Gosling seems to be phoning it in and Kristin Scott Thomas is so villainous that she might as well be a cartoon. Only God Forgives is about as bad as a film from an extremely talented filmmaker can be. See it for the art design and cinematography; there’s not much else there.
