Movie Review: Parkland
2.5 out of 5 Stars
Director: Peter Landesman
Starring: Zac Effron, Tom Welling, Billy Bob Thorton
Recommended To: History buffs not expecting a definitive look into the chaos that followed the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
Synopsis: Scenes from and around Dallas Parkland Hospital on the day U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
Review: Director/writer Peter Landesman's Parkland is an interesting concept undermined by its desire to be a movie rather than a miniseries. By trying to tie numerous stories into one 90-minute film Landesman leaves too much of the context, depth of character and story out of the movie. It hints at fascinating side stories without ever giving them or their characters the explanation they need or deserve. Yes, it conveys the sense of panic, confusion and pure chaos that came following the assassination and, perhaps due to the subject matter itself rather than the filmmaking, captures the sense of sadness and anger that reverberated throughout America. It doesn't provide true insight or anything new that couldn't be found within any archival newscast. Stretched out with all the details put in place Parkland might have had something to offer. As it is the all-star cast is essentially wasted.
