Movie Review: Great Expectations
3 out of 5 Stars
Director: Mike Newell
Starring: Jeremy Irvine, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Holliday Grainger
Genre: Drama, Romance
Recommended To: Fans of Charles Dickens novel willing to settle for a solid adaptation that probably should have been far better than it is considering the talent involved.
Synopsis: Pip (Jeremy Irvine) is a blacksmiths apprentice who is raised to the level of gentleman courtesy of an anonymous benefactor.
Review: Based on the talent involved I had high hopes for the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. Certainly director Mike Newell has had a fairly inconsistent career ranging from the delightful Four Weddings and a Funeral to the middling Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and I'm still trying to establish an opinion of screenwriter David Nicholl's (One Day), but with the combination of Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham and Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch how could things go awry? A less-than-stellar performance by Jeremy Irvine as Pip, the uneven script, overly dark visuals and slow pacing make the experience less than it should be, but to call the film a complete disappointment would be overstating it. Newell's Great Expectations doesn't touch David Lean's, but it's still worth a look.
