Sundance 2014: Memphis
2 out of 5 Stars
Director: Tim Sutton
Starring: Willis Earl Beal, Lopaka Thomas, Constance Brantley, Devonte Hull, John Gary Williams, Larry Dodso
Recommended to: Those that think a story is completely overrated.
Synopsis: A singer wanders through Memphis in hopes of finding inspiration for his next album.
Review: Memphis is a perfect example of a film where the script's slack of focus (or story) derails an otherwise well-made movie. Like its protagonist the film shows a great amount of promise but never delivers more than a few bars of greatness scattered between a whole lot of meandering. I think I'm supposed to get a sense of Memphis and it's decaying glory and how it relates to the protagonist's songwriting, but he never actually writes anything and that creates a dissatisfying disconnect that I couldn't get past.
