(KUTV) Most parents know that babies will cry when they are hungry, but there are other signs or cues that a baby is ready to eat.
Those cues can help premature babies leave the hospital much sooner.
There are a number of reasons why a baby is born prematurely and the number one question from parents is when the baby will be healthy enough to go home.
Doctor Ronald Stoddard is a neonatologist at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, and he says premature babies will give cues to let doctors and parents know they are ready to eat. The early signs would be a baby turning their head to root and bringing their hands to their mouths.
Babies born prematurely are usually fed through an IV or GI tube until they are healthy enough to start eating on their own.
