Woman Gives Birth to Triplets After 11 Years of Trying to Get Pregnant
(KUTV) – After eleven years, dreams of becoming parents finally came true for Cherie and Josh MacLean. "I’ve waited so long," said Cherie. "I mean 11-years is a really long time." In April, Cherie gave birth to triplets. "I think we are more excited about the triplets then most people," said Cherie.
Bringing the triplets into the world was not easy. First, Cherie struggled to get pregnant. She underwent several fertility treatments before she conceived last year. Then at 13 weeks gestation, Cherie had to go on bed rest after a rupture in her placenta. Then at 17 weeks, doctors discovered that two of the babies, identical twins, had Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. This occurs when one twin starts taking nutrients away from its sibling. Cherie would have to undergo surgery. "They did the surgery at 19 weeks. And they were kind of like ‘we will see if you make it to 24’."
Cherie did make it to 24 weeks. However, she would deliver her triplets nearly 3 months premature. "It was sad," said Cherie. "Sad because it is too early and you know it is not time."
Cherie’s daughters will spend the next two months in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. Both Cherie and her husband are already counting down the days to when they can bring them home. "They are not bad, but it is a long ways to get to where they can come home."
