Interior designer Kristin Rocke shows us how to decorate a bookshelf. Many of us find we need to wrangle in our bookshelves from time to time. A lot of people dont know where to start.
First evaluate whether your bookshelves are primarily library or display.
Library: Line your books up an inch or two back from edge of shelf by height. Organize books by color Place books with bound edge facing up. Buy books by color or reverse dust jackets. Hang art from book shelves. Tear off covers of paperbacks Do the back of shelves a different color or use wallpaper.
Decorative: Shift direction of books. Don't put every book out Rotate books and display for interest or holiday. Unless library shelves or your shelf is full then the books shouldn't be leaning against the sides. Use a cohesive color. Place objects, photo frames or curiosities in with books. Balance think geometry across shelves and diagonally in terms of form, color and weight. Visually evaluate.
