Two Arrested In Dangerous Doughnut Scam
By Chris Jones
(KUTV) Two people who initially said they had eaten doughnuts laced with shards of razor blades have now allegedly admitted to placing the metal in the pastries themselves. According to Draper police, the pair concocted the scheme so they could try and get a financial settlement from Smith’s grocery stores where they purchased the doughnuts.
Carol Lee Leazer-Hardman and Michael Condor worked at a Dollar Store in the same strip mall where the Smith’s store is located. According to police, the pair had complained to one another about financial problems they were enduring, then came up with the plan. Police say eventually Condor admitted that the two had planted the metal in the doughnuts so they could get a settlement from the store.
Smith’s vice president of public affairs says as soon as the store fielded the report they immediately pulled the doughnuts off the shelves. Marsha Gilford says the company was instantly skeptical of the story, but says the store went to great lengths to make sure other packages were not affected.
Police say another woman was offered the doughnuts by Condor. She bit into the doughnut but spit it out when she found the shards in her mouth. Police say she was not a part of the scheme.
