Homeless Man Arrested On Kidnapping Charges
(KUTV) According to police, Leland McClure, 59, was arrested early Thursday and booked into the Utah County Jail on a charge of child kidnapping.
Official reports indicate the incident occurred Sunday when a nine-year-old girl was returning a gas can to some neighbors near the area of 890 N. 400 W. She was walking with two boys ages nine and 10 when McClure allegedly grabbed her by the arm and stated he was "going to take her."
Police interviews with the victim told officers that another male, whom she didn't know, yelled at McClure to let her go or he would call 911. McClure let go of the girl and ran. The victim told police that she had seen McClure walking around the block at least twice while she was at her friends home, prior to the incident.
McClure was seen Wednesday soliciting in the parking lot of the Lindon Walmart. McClure was taken to the Pleasant Grove police department where he told officers that he was in the area visiting a friend on Sunday when the incident occurred, but told officers he never made contact with any children that day.
McClure told officers that he was homeless and has been sleeping on the streets and earns close to $40 a day through solicitation. According to police reports, McClure has been arrested in several other states and charged with various violent crimes including aggravated kidnapping.
