Web Exclusive: The Backstory
Shauna Lake: How long did you sit on the information before you actually did something with it?
Anita Hill: I was working in Washington DC for Clarence Thomas for about 3 years in the early 80s and the hearing were in 1991 and so it goes to 8 years later. And trust me I had no intention of filing a sexual harassment claim against Clarence Thomas and so it's important for people to remember that I wasn't pressing a sexual harassment claim that when you do that you go to court there are rules, there is an investigation and there all kinds of rules and ways you go through the judicial system. What I was doing at that point was talking about the competency; who was in fact nominated for a lifetime appointment so it was, the reason for the information was entirely different than if I had been filing a sexual harassment claim. As I say to people if I had been filing a complaint I would have expected to personally get something out of it but this wasn't a situation that I was going into where I was going to benefit except in knowing that I had done the right thing.
