So you are fighting to survive, then you go into a coma. Then you wake up, and then the reality probably of your new life hits you. What’s that like?STEPHANIE NIELSON:
Yeah I mean I woke up and I couldn’t move, and I was wrapped up. I looked like a mummy. And you know they told me I was burned and…SHAUNA LAKE:
Do you really even understand what that means at that point?STEPHANIE NIELSON:
Nope. I remember thinking wow burned people are scary. Freddy Krueger, he’s scary. And Hollywood or any sort of movies or whatever, television, if they want to create a scary monster, it’s always someone who’s burned. I mean the monster is always someone scary and deformed and ugly. And so when they told me I was burned, those were the images that I had. And I never thought I could have a happy, normal life. I just didn’t plan on that. It wasn’t something that I had ever achieved.SHAUNA LAKE:
Even though you still had your children, your husband?
In fact at that stage in my life, I was hoping that my family would take my children away. Or that I would be sent away to a home somewhere and just live the rest of my life because I didn’t want them to worry or suffer or be embarrassed over me. I just thought it would be better to just leave the situation.
