We Exlcusive: Moran Eye Center
SHAUNA LAKE: I want to talk a little bit about the Moran Eye Center. Is Utah really lucky to have a place of that caliber here?
DR. CRANDALL: Well actually tremendously lucky. If you look at it, internationally itas a well-known institute for both the clinical research, clinical surgery as well as research. For a state our size, which is relatively small, we have a building and the NIH grant is equivalent to Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, I mean some very, very big schools in the world. So this really is, it represents a class A group, world class organization.
SHAUNA LAKE: Do a lot of states not have something of that magnitude?
DR. CRANDALL: Oh almost none do. I mean really if you look at it, certainly just look at our surrounding states, Denver has the University of Colorado which is nowhere near the size that we are. You go to UCLA, they would have one. USC would have one. Portland, Oregon has a smaller one, Washington. Montana zero, Idaho zero, Wyoming zero. Nebraska, all the Midwestern states. University of Iowa is probably equivalent, but not many. Down in Houston you might find one or two. So thereas not, and none of those other states are as small as we are.
