Web Exclusive: Mike Weir's Family Life
Golfer Mike Weir discusses his family life with Shauna Lake.
SHAUNA LAKE: Okay now when you say we, I’m assuming you mean your wife and your family. So tell me how you met your wife, who she is and kind of how that all came together.
MIKE WEIR: Well her name is, her maiden name is Rodriguez, Bricia Rodriguez. I met her at BYU. I kind of caught eyes with her as a freshman and then sophomore year we moved into an apartment complex, and we happened to be in the same apartment complex. Another guy on our golf team, Jeff Kramer, knew her roommate and through that connection, we met and went out for a date. Went out for a football game that was our first date and kind of hit it off.
SHAUNA LAKE: So you’ve been married how many years?
MIKE WEIR: Nineteen.
SHAUNA LAKE: Nineteen years.
MIKE WEIR: Nineteen years, yeah.
SHAUNA LAKE: Wow and you have how many kids?
MIKE WEIR: We have two daughters, 15 and 13 years old.
SHAUNA LAKE: And what’s it like to be the father of teenage daughters?
MIKE WEIR: So far so good. Everything’s pretty good so far. You know they’re great kids and they’re very active. They’re not golfers, although my oldest girl is kind of picking it up a little bit now, but they both love sports, soccer in particular.
SHAUNA LAKE: So when a guy comes to pick your daughter up for a date, do you answer the door with a golf club in hand?
MIKE WEIR: No one’s come to the door yet so, you know that will probably be handy when that day comes so yeah not too much going on there.
SHAUNA LAKE: Does she kind of hold down the fort when you’re…I mean assuming that you’re life’s kind of hectic and you’re traveling and doing these tours. What is that like?
MIKE WEIR: Yeah it’s very hectic. I rely a lot on Bricia. She runs the family. She runs the household. She’s got to take care of things because I’m on the road a lot, and I try to do the best I can, phone calls when I’m on the road to take care of things. But yeah, it’s a big job to run two kids around when I’m gone most of the year really. So I got a good one there.
