Web Exclusive: Mendenhall's Son's Unusual Names
Bronco Mendenhall tells Shauna Lake about his son's unusual names and the meaning behind them.
SHAUNA LAKE: Your boys’ names are unusual.
BRONCO MENDENHALL: Yeah.
SHAUNA LAKE: Tell me what their names are again.
BRONCO MENDENHALL: So the motive first is my name, and it has produced so many unique experiences that...and I thought that would help promote their growth. So my oldest boy is Cutter. His middle name is Bronc. So I grew up training cutting horses and if you ride a cutting horse, you're a cutter. So Cutter Bronc.
SHAUNA LAKE: Cutter Bronc, and he is how old?
BRONCO MENDENHALL: He's 13 and passionate about poetry, the performing arts. Has a strong desire to go on with academia, plays the sax, loves Latin, really an academic. My next boy is Breaker, Breaker Blue. So Breaker Morant was one of the famous horse trainers when I grew up, but I love the ocean and so kind of a duel meaning, Breaker for the waves when they break and then Blue, color of the ocean. So Breaker Blue.
SHAUNA LAKE: And BYU blue, maybe?
BRONCO MENDENHALL: Yeah that wasn't part of it at that time but yeah. And Breaker's a real outdoorsman, hunting, fishing, horses, just play. He loves to be outside. And then there’s Raeder, Raeder Steele is my youngest. And so Holly's father's name was Ray. He passed away and we had Cutter and Breaker and so we were thinking how does Ray and -er and so Raeder is what we came up with as a tribute to Holly's dad. And then Steele just for the intent of hoping he was strong and persevered.
