London's Subway System Turns 150 Years Old
(KUTV) London’s subway system, also known as the “tube” is turning 150 years old.
In its 150 year history, the subway system has been both loved and hated. It was developed in the 9th century when there were market stalls on the street – and the tube unblocked streets with an underground railway.
During World War II, the tubes tunnels and platforms provided safe haven from Nazi bombs.
Current Mayor Boris Johnson has promised to renovate the system and bring new technology to the tube to make the ride better for Londoners.
Later this week, the London Underground will recreate the first passenger journey with a series of restored steam trains.
