Close Election Results Prompt Calls For Opposition Protest
(KUTV) – If Nicolas Maduro is proclaimed the Venezuelan presidential election's official winner Monday afternoon, opposition candidate Henrique Capriles Radonski says Venezuelans nationwide should protest Monday night.
Radonski said Venezuelan authorities should cancel plans to proclaim Maduro the presidential election's winner.
"If both sides have said that they want to count vote for vote, what is the rush? What are they hiding? Why do we have to accelerate the process? What they want is for the truth not to be known," he said.
Venezuelan authorities have said Maduro will be officially proclaimed as the election's winner Monday afternoon.
White House spokesman Jay carney told reporters Monday Venezuela’s reported results were “extremely close” and an audit would be “an important and prudent” step.
The secretary-general of the Organization of American States said Monday that he also supports an initiative to recount votes in Venezuela and offered the support of the regional body's election experts.
