(KUTV) A Cache County man is behind bars after Logan police say Sammie Lee Hodges, 28, shackled his 6-year-old son to a bed while he went to work, "we're able to go into the home and find the child in a downstairs room," says Logan City Police Chief Gary Jensen, "The child was physically chained to a what I would call a metal pedestal, which holds a box spring and a mattress," says Jensen.
The chief says police received an anonymous call about the child around 11 a.m. Police arrived in the neighborhood, climbed in an open window and found the boy inside. The chief says the child was left with some snacks, water, and enough slack in the chain, to make it to a nearby bathroom, but hauling the chain, says the chief. Which must have been an imposing task for the little boy, "it was a heavy logging style, towing style chain, it was a heavy chain padlocked on each end," says the chief.
Neighbors say they didn't know much about Hodges or the woman who was living in the rented home with him. Ike Buckley says there were four children total living in the house, the little boy, two 8-year-old twin girls, and an older boy, perhaps 10 years old. Buckley says the children did not appear to be abused and would often stop at his house next door to ask for sweets, "he would just knock on the door and say, 'can I have a treat?'" says Buckley.
Hodges is being held in the Cache County Jail, facing 4 counts of child abuse, and the little boy we are told is in the care of DCFS.
