Utah's Core Curriculum Center Of Controversy
(KUTV) SALT LAKE CITY – Utah's core curriculum has suddenly become controversial.
The program tries to raise standards for high school graduates in English and Math.
Now, it's under scrutiny as an agent of federal control.
And Governor Herbert is in the middle of this
He helped create the core curriculum and he defended it. But then today, he supported a resolution to reconsider the core curriculum, and that could bring the end of the program.
At this news conference last week, the Governor said the core curriculum is a Utah way to help kids learn basics.
But today, the governor supported a resolution that could lead to the end of the common core.
Conservatives, including Gayle Ruzika of the Eagle Forum say the core curriculum is being taken over by Washington, and Utah should get out of it.
School leaders say they won't allow Washington control of Utah schools.
“I'm not willing and neither is the board to turn over any aspect of Utah schools to the feds,” said Dr. Larry Shumway, State Superintendent.
Educators are worried. They say the governor has changed and may not support the core curriculum.
Educators, conservatives and the governor all agree this resolution could lead to the end of the core curriculum.
Allie Isom speaks for the governor.
“It's not a foregone conclusion,” she said, but when asked if it could end the core curriculum, she did say, “It’s possible.”
