Lockhart Critical Of Governor on Opening Day of Legislative Session
(KUTV) As Utah's latest legislative session begins, the Speaker of the Utah House of Representatives took a shot at Governor Gary Herbert.
Rep. Becky Lockhart has done what many would consider unthinkable, during her speech to mark the opening of this this year's session; she criticized the governor on his positions. She was critical that he was willing to take Affordable Care Act funding to help Utah pay for the health care of Utah's poor.
Lockhart told the members of the state representatives that the governor's office needs someone with energy, not an "inaction figure," in the governor's seat. After the speech, Lockhart was reluctant to repeat the criticism. She told reporters there are other places on the governor's agenda that lack action; including, transportation, air quality, and education.
Lockhart is thought by many to be a candidate for governor in 2016, although she has yet to make her plans clear.
The governor responded to the criticism by stating, "I want to welcome the Legislature back into general session and look forward to working with them. I hope we can all set aside politics and political ambition and focus on the work of the people of Utah."
