Governor Herbert, House Speaker Lockhart Square Off Over Medicaid Expansion
(KUTV) Governor Gary Herbert says Utah will help its poor with their medical bills – but House Speaker Becky Lockhart says Utah must not take any federal money to do it.
House Speaker Lockhart attacked the Governor Monday calling him an “inaction” figure over the chief issue diving the two: expanding Utah Medicaid.
The Governor says Utah will do something and says Utah has 60,000 uninsured poor and the Federal Government is offering Utah $1.3-billion dollars a year to insure those people.
Lockhart says Utah must not take that money and says she doesn’t believe the people of Utah should get more involved with “the failure that is Obamacare.”
Lockhart says she is working on a plan to offer health insurance without federal money.
Jim Dunnigan, the legislative leader on health care, says there will likely be a meeting between legislators and the Governor to try to solve the impasse.
