Proposed Bill Will Block Future School District Splits
(KUTV) South Jordan City is exploring the idea of breaking away from the Jordan District, but they may not ever get the chance if a new bill on the hill passes later this week.
HB-84 would tie the hands of cities with cash wanting to split from their not so affluent neighbors.
South Jordan's new mayor and council members are actively trying to defeat this bill and met with other Salt Lake County mayors Monday night to see if they could garner support, but this isn't just a South Jordan issue if this bill passes it would affect every district and school in the state.
This bill that's already passed committee would leave the door open for districts to split, but the school board would have to say they want to get rid of some of their schools and giving up power.
There can also be a grass roots effort by the people, but cities or groups of cities could not choose to leave together.
