Cougars Come Up Short Against Irish
(KUTV) BYU was in position to win at South Bend but the No. 5 Irish did just enough to pull out a 17-14 victory. Despite the close loss, BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said his team played one its most complete games of the season.
"[We] had a great chance at a number of chances to make [or] maybe pull off an upset," Mendenhall said at the podium. "Ah, but ultimately we didn't make a critical play here or there [or] right down the stretch to win the game."
BYU led Notre Dame 14-10 in the 4th quarter but the Cougars defense couldn't the hold Irish out of the end zone, as George Atkinson scored from 2 yards out to give Notre Dame the 17-14 lead.
Riley Nelson threw a pick in the final seconds of the game seal the Cougars' defeat. Still, Mendenhall said his team did everything except win the game.
"I was proud of our team, proud of their effort, proud of their preparation from Monday all the way through this week, and I thought they played really hard."
