(KUTV) Ty Detmer talked to BYU Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall and Offensive Coordinator Robert Anae about the vacant quarterback coaching position at BYU but he decided now was not a good time to get into the college game.

Detmer was at the Salt Palace Convention Center for the 7th Annual Western Hunting & Conservation Expo.  He was meeting potential hunters who would like a private, guided hunt on Detmer’s 1,300 acre T14 ranch in Texas.

Detmer says he enjoys coaching high school football but feels he has some knowledge high school players can’t absorb.  He also mentioned that ironically one of his best prep players is playing college ball at Miami.

The Hurricanes of course are Detmer’s signature win.  Ty is not a fan of traveling and knows it is a big part of recruiting which is a crucial portion of every college assistant coach’s job description.

Detmer did say he felt bad for Alex Smith, watching the former Ute get benched in San Francisco despite the fact he was playing well.  About four minutes of the 10 minute interview aired Saturday night on Talkin’ Sports.
