USA National Team Coming To Rio Tinto Stadium
By David James
(KUTV) The USA National team is coming to Rio Tinto Stadium in June and July and Real Salt Lake will be back in Sandy to open the season Saturday. The game has an earlier than normal start time, kick-off is at 4pm MT. RSL has started fast, earning three point in two road games while only giving up a single goal. The defense has been impressive considering it is anchored by a brand new back four. Jamison Olave now plays in New York while Nat Borchers and Chris Wingert are still bouncing back from off-season surgery. Coach Jason Kreis points out, although they have given up just a single goal, they have allowed several good goal scoring chances the opponent hasn’t been able to finish.
Colorado is in last place in the Western Conference. The Rapids have a 0-2 record after losing to Philadelphia at home 2-1 Sunday.
The USA National team will play a World Cup qualifier against Honduras in Sandy on June 18th. Rio Tinto Stadium will also host a Gold Cup doubleheader July 13th, with the USA facing Cuba and Costa Rica playing Belize. The USA has played two qualifiers in Utah beating Costa Rica in 3-0 in 2005 at Rice-Eccles Stadium and El Salvador 2-1 in 2009 at Rio Tinto Stadium. This is the first time the Gold Cup has been played in Utah.
