Interview: David Moulton Talks FGCU
(KUTV) Florida Gulf Coast University is the only Sweet 16 team overshadowed by the school’s women’s team.
The Eagles are the first 15 seed to make it to the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. The story of how they played their way into the nation’s elite is shocking. Florida Gulf Coast is in Naples, south of Fort Meyer’s on the state’s western side. The school was first proposed in 1991 and the first classes were held in 1997.
David Moulton is a local newspaper columnist ad sports radio talk show host. He also does the play-by-play on the school’s radio broadcasts. Moulton says school administrators wanted the sports teams to compete at the NAIA or NCAA Division II levels, but they didn’t want the isolated school. So Moulton says the school went NCAA Division I even though they weren’t prepared for it. Moulton says they started playing Division I basketball six years ago and only became eligible for the NCCA Tournament last year. He says until this year the women’s basketball team drew larger crowds than the men, so the men played Saturday at 5 p.m. and the women played at 7:30. Listen to the interview here.
